Following the very poor representation of women at last years Northern Powerhouse Conference, we ran some focus groups in Manchester. We drew together the varied experience of local leaders trying to find out why there were so few female voices at such a high profile event. 

Our research reveals the conscious awareness of unconscious bias but how little is done to challenge the biases that are hindering women’s progression, and how outdated conceptions of leadership and what makes a ‘good’ leader undermine the contributions women make.
